Rest Home Sing-Alongs

uke-oldies

Since the summer of 2014 we’ve been doing a semi-monthly ukulele-accompanied sing-along for residents of the Gallatin Rest Home in their activities room. This on an ongoing/ad hoc drop-in basis. Check the B.U.C. event calendar and show up ready to sing (and/or) play ukulele. It’s casual and easy-going.

TIME/DAY: Alternating Mondays at 3:00 – Check the B.U.C. event calendar to see the next scheduled Monday.

PLACE: Gallatin Rest Home (1221 Durston, Bozeman)

WHO: Anyone who wants to play along (or even just sing) is welcome. We provide songbooks. We don’t always keep things at a beginning level, but adventurous beginners are still welcome to give it a shot! If we play some songs that are a stretch for your playing ability, just sing along and/or smile!

WHAT’S IT LIKE: We try to make everyone feel like part of the singalong and keep it casual and fun. The number of ukers and rest home residents varies, but the group is pretty small. (Usually 10-20 people in the room, total.)

WHAT’S EXPECTED? Bring your ukulele and show up at 3 pm (or 5 minutes prior). We provide song binders. If you want to bone up, you can preview the PDFs below. It’s easier if you DO NOT bring your own music binder, so the organizer can keep all the binders up to date.

(There are no practices, but practice on your own if you like.)

TIPS: Although this is not a performance, it’s more enjoyable if we all resist the urge to practice, experiment or riff between songs. Try to be sensitive to how much noise you make, as it can be unpleasant for listeners if we create too much chaos.

Practice Sheets: The organizer brings enough song binders for all, so you do not need to print your own unless you like to practice at home. *NOTE: We sometimes add sheets or reorganize, so the PDFs here are subject to changes or updates. We jump around as we play! Some songs are easy, some are harder.

Thanks to San Jose Ukulele Club and Doctor Uke as the sources of the majority of the music I’ve compiled in these practice booklets.

If you have songs to add to the list, feel free to email them so we can make copies and add them to the binder. We stick to songs that people ages 75+ are familiar enough with that they can sing along. (They tend to prefer songs from their youth, e.g. 1920s-1950s.)
